- The "requires 80" in the original error message appears to be due to my terminal window size (it was set to 75X20) so it was not echoing error messages to the screen. When I used the gpsmon /dev/serial0 I got a few more characters that allowed me to figure that out. Still doesn't work, but now with a window size change it is a bit more verbose:

gpsmon:ERROR: device open of /dev/serial0 failed: Device or resource busy - retrying read-only
gpsmon:ERROR: read-only device open of /dev/serial0 failed: Device or resource busy
